Peter Hagoort inducted as Fellow of the British Academy
The British Academy is the United Kingdom's national institute for the humanities and social sciences. The institution has only a limited number of members, who are elected on the basis of exceptional scientific merit.
Hagoort calls the election a special honour: "The British Academy is primarily a British affair, but they also have a small number of international fellows. It is a recognition that I greatly appreciate. Ultimately, it is about scientific excellence in your field, and it is an honour to be nominated and elected by colleagues from another country."
In addition to its role as a scientific society, the British Academy also has an important advisory function towards the British government and society. For example, it publishes reports on current social and cultural issues. Although Hagoort, as an international fellow, will not be directly involved in this type of advisory work, it does mean a new connection for him with a broad network of researchers in the humanities and social sciences.
The official inauguration of the new fellows took place in London. Hagoort enjoyed the inauguration: "It is above all a festive occasion. You receive an official certificate and are formally welcomed. For me personally, it feels like a wonderful recognition of my work and, of course, of the field I represent."
