The neurobiology of language beyond single words

The classical Wernicke-Lichtheim-Geschwind model of the neurobiology of language was based on an analysis of single word perception and production. However, language processing involves a lot more than production and comprehension of single words. In this talk I will focus on the neurobiological infrastructure for processing language beyond single words. The Memory, Unification and Control (MUC) model provides a neurobiological plausible account of the underlying neural architecture. I will focus on operations that unify the lexical building blocks into larger structures. MEG, fMRI, resting state connectivity data, and results from Psycho-Physiological Interactions will be discussed, suggesting a division of labour between temporal and inferior frontal cortex. These results indicate that Broca’s area and adjacent cortex play an important role in semantic and syntactic unification operations. I will discuss to what extent these operations are shared between language comprehension and production. I will also discuss fMRI results that indicate the insufficiency of the Mirror Neuron Hypothesis to explain language understanding. In short, I will sketch a picture of language processing from an embrained perspective.
