Talent+ by Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics: Expanding Access to Science

Talent+
At the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, we believe in expanding opportunities for aspiring scientists from diverse backgrounds. Our new Talent+ programme embodies this commitment, welcoming its first cohort of six international students.

MPI Director Prof. Dr. Caroline Rowland explains: “As an institute, we always look beyond borders—both literally and figuratively—and we are delighted to offer these young people this opportunity. At the same time, we benefit from the diversity they bring to our teams, which fosters greater creativity and innovation. The students are now conducting fundamental research using the latest technologies and receiving training in various skills. They are also networking and connecting with different research institutes in our city and across the Netherlands. In this way, they expand their knowledge and experience in a lasting manner, helping all involved institutions grow.”

Benefits for Nijmegen

The arrival of the six students also enriches the city beyond the realm of fundamental science, explains Talent+ Director, Candice Frances: “Initiatives like Talent+ provide economic advantages. For instance, we received funding for this from the Max Planck Society in Germany. Additionally, Talent+ strengthens Nijmegen’s position on the international scientific map: many of these students come from countries with which we previously had no collaboration, and with this programme, we are truly leading the way in engaging diverse, talented people.”

The beauty of the Netherlands’ flat countryside

One of the students, Deema Takaleh, shares her experience of the first few months: “I am really lucky to being a participant in the Talents+ internship at MPI, where I gained hands-on experience in research, programming, academic writing, and problem-solving. I also delved deeper into genetics and bioinformatics, which enhanced my experience in scientific research and helped me establish a strong foundation. In addition, I learned how to balance between work and social activities, which fostered both professional growth and personal connections with professional people. I will never forget the beauty of the Netherlands’ flat countryside. The picturesque canals, traditional windmills, and endless green fields create such a unique and serene landscape—it’s truly captivating.”

Local Support Welcome

Talent+ has already proven successful, and we aim to continue the programme once the first six students complete their stay. We are always on the lookout for housing. Do you have or know of a place where scientific students could stay temporarily? Please contact Candice Frances at Candice.Frances [at] mpi.nl (Candice[dot]Frances[at]mpi[dot]nl). Do you support Talent+? Let MPI know! Your support and positive feedback will contribute to ongoing financial backing.
