Asli Ozyurek elected as 2025 Fellow of the Cognitive Science Society
Aslı shared her thoughts on this milestone: “It’s not only an honor to share this recognition with other giants in cognitive science, but it’s also a meaningful acknowledgment of Multimodal Language as a vital area within the field. For me, this nomination represents the growing acceptance of my work and of Multimodal Language as an integral part of Cognitive Science.
My mission will be fulfilled when communicating through gestures and facial expressions is fully recognized as part of language and cognition—no longer relegated to the periphery, but embraced at the core of the field. I also hope this marks the continuation of a broader trend toward greater inclusion in science, as diverse perspectives foster new and innovative ideas.
For instance, my approach to language and cognition has been deeply influenced by my own background, including speaking Turkish, a language rich in gestures and facial expressions. I hope the Society will continue to expand its commitment to diversity, enabling even more voices and perspectives to shape the future of cognitive science.”
