This year, the members of the MLD department showcase exciting research breakthroughs at the poster session at the 46th Annual Meeting of the Cognitive Science Society (CogSci), held in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Four poster presentations represented the department, each highlighting significant contributions to the field of cognitive science.

  • Paula Rubio-Fernández presented her work:

"Beyond typicality: Lexical category affects the use and processing of color words", which explores the nuanced influence of lexical categories on how color terms are utilized and comprehended in communication.                                                                                    Long, M., & Rubio-Fernández, P. (2024). Beyond typicality: Lexical category affects the use and processing of color words. Poster presented at the 46th Annual Meeting of the Cognitive Science Society (CogSci 2024), Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

  • Sho Akamine contributed with his research:

"Speakers align both their gestures and words not only to establish but also to maintain reference to create shared labels for novel objects in interaction", shedding light on the dynamic interplay between verbal and gestural alignment in the co-construction of meaning during interactions.                                                                                          Akamine, S., Ghaleb, E., Rasenberg, M., Fernandez, R., Meyer, A. S., & Özyürek, A. (2024). Speakers align both their gestures and words not only to establish but also to maintain reference to create shared labels for novel objects in interaction. Poster presented at the 46th Annual Meeting of the Cognitive Science Society (CogSci 2024), Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

  • Ezgi Mamus offered insights into non-visual communication:

"Differences in the gesture kinematics of blind, blindfolded, and sighted speakers", comparing the gestural behaviors across individuals with varying visual experiences.    Mamus, E., Kanakanti, M., & Özyürek, A. (2024). Differences in the gesture kinematics of blind, blindfolded, and sighted speakers. Poster presented at the 46th Annual Meeting of the Cognitive Science Society (CogSci 2024), Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

  • Anita Slonimska presented her study:

"Kinematic modulations of iconicity in child-directed communication in Italian Sign Language". examining how iconic gestures are adapted in interactions with children within the context of Italian Sign Language                                                                                Slonimska, A., Di Renzo, A. d., Kanakanti, M., Campisi, E., & Özyürek, A. (2024). Kinematic modulations of iconicity in child-directed communication in Italian Sign Language.
