Stephanie Forkel is a Principal Investigator and Research Group Leader in Clinical Neuroanatomy at the Donders Institute, an Associate Professor of Psycholinguistics at Radboud University, and an honorary research Associate Professor in Neuroimaging at King’s College London, and a Research Associate at the Max Planck Institute in the Netherlands. She also leads the Language and Communication Theme, a multidisciplinary group of 280 researchers across the six Donders Institutes, all driven by a shared passion for understanding language, from its genetic underpinnings to behavioural manifestations.
In 2023, Stephanie was honoured with the prestigious Elizabeth Warrington Prize by the British Neuropsychological Society, recognising her pioneering work in the neuroanatomy of language.
She currently serves as the Programme Chair for the Organization for Human Brain Mapping (OHBM), where she led the organisation of the 3,200-strong conference in Seoul, Korea.
Her research centres on inter-individual variability in brain anatomy (neurovariability) and its profound impact on cognition across different brain states in health and neurological disorders such as stroke, tumour, and degeneration. By exploring the interplay between shared neural traits and individual differences, her work seeks to revolutionise neurological diagnostics, predictions, and treatments. This innovative approach has the potential to propel the field of precision neuroscience forward, particularly in the context of aphasia, enabling more personalised and effective interventions that can significantly improve patient outcomes and deepen our understanding of the brain's complex, integrative functions.
In addition to her academic and research roles, Stephanie actively shares updates in the field through her collaborative YouTube channel, @CNSeminars, where she hosts discussions and lectures on cutting-edge topics in clinical neuroscience. Her contributions to education through this platform were recognised with the OHBM Education in Neuroscience Award, underscoring her commitment to advancing knowledge and fostering learning within the scientific community.
